Clearance: Active TS/SCI required
Employment Type: Full-time

About Onyx Point

Onyx Point delivers engineering, automation, and security expertise to mission-critical government programs. We hire engineers who want deep technical ownership and give them the autonomy to run with it.

Position Summary

We are looking for an Apache NiFi expert.

This is a NiFi-centered role supporting COE dataflow operations in Virginia Beach, Virginia. You will own the pipelines that move mission data — building, tuning, and troubleshooting NiFi flows that handle data leveling, transformation, and ingestion into national COE enterprise repositories, and that deliver post-mission data to end users.

We are not looking for someone who has touched NiFi on a project. We are looking for someone who knows it deeply: custom processors, flow design under load, back pressure and prioritization, provenance and lineage, clustering, and the judgment to diagnose a misbehaving flow quickly when a mission depends on it.

The broader environment includes Windows and Linux systems, virtualized infrastructure, and networking. Familiarity there is valuable, but NiFi depth is what defines this role.

What You'll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain Apache NiFi dataflows supporting COE mission data operations.
  • Tune NiFi for throughput, reliability, and recoverability — back pressure, prioritization, clustering, and provenance.
  • Develop and integrate custom processors and controller services where standard components fall short.
  • Configure and manage remote COE dataflows, including data leveling, data transformation, and data ingestion in compliance with national COE enterprise repository standards.
  • Engineer COE data configuration and routing methodology to meet mission requirements and post-mission delivery to end users.
  • Troubleshoot dataflow issues in support of active mission operations, often under time pressure.
  • Support the surrounding infrastructure — systems, virtualization, and network components — as the pipelines require.
  • Apply configuration management practices across the dataflow environment: tracking requirements, changes, risks, test results, and tasks.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline.
  • Deep, demonstrable expertise with Apache NiFi. You should be able to walk us through flows you have designed, problems you have debugged, and decisions you made about how data moves.
  • Ten (10) years of full-time professional experience in the design, implementation, installation, configuration, maintenance, integration, and deployment of COE systems, to include wired and wireless networks and devices such as routers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Three (3) years of full-time experience in remote COE dataflow configuration and management, including data leveling, data transformation, and data ingestion protocols for compliance with national COE enterprise repositories, and in engineering COE data configuration and routing methodology to meet mission requirements and post-mission delivery to end users.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance, maintainable for the duration of employment.
  • Ability to work on-site in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Desired Qualifications

Strength in any of these is a plus, but none is a gate. Strong NiFi candidates who are lighter here are encouraged to apply.

  • Windows Active Directory Services / Primary Domain Controller (PDC)
  • Windows configuration, administration, and deployment
  • Linux configuration, administration, and deployment
  • Virtual machine deployment (VMware/vSphere)
  • Hardware and software configuration management — tracking bugs, enhancements, requirements, risks, test results, and tasks
  • System and network security work: designing, implementing, configuring, and enforcing security controls across network, hardware, and software components and devices
